St. Lucia vs the Maldives is the honeymoon decision more couples get stuck on than any other, and the honest answer is that they’re competing on completely different things. One gives you volcanic drama, a pool with mountains in it and a trip you can actually afford. The other gives you the most beautiful water on earth and very little else to do, which for a honeymoon might be exactly the point.

Both destinations sell the same fantasy: your own pool, no one else in sight, and two weeks of nobody asking anything of you. But choosing between St. Lucia and the Maldives for a honeymoon isn’t really about which is prettier. It’s about whether you want a place to look at or a place to swim in, whether you’d rather be able to leave the resort or not care that you can’t, and how much of the budget is going on flights before you’ve had a single cocktail.

We’ve ranked both in depth, in our 8 best private pool villas in St. Lucia and our 10 best overwater bungalows in the Maldives, and this is the head-to-head that settles it. Five categories, an honest winner in each, and no pretending one destination sweeps everything, because it doesn’t.

The short answer
St. LuciaThe private pool. Two St. Lucia resorts put a pool in every single suite, one of them with the Pitons at the end of it. In the Maldives a pool villa is usually a paid upgrade.
MaldivesThe water and the beach. This isn’t close. Warm, shallow, impossibly clear lagoons and a reef off your deck, against volcanic coves where the best pool resorts aren’t on a beach at all.
DependsVibe and privacy. The Maldives gives you one island, one resort and total seclusion. St. Lucia gives you somewhere you can actually explore. Which of those sounds like your honeymoon?
St. LuciaCost. Before you count the rooms, the Maldives adds a seaplane or speedboat transfer for two, and there’s no cheaper restaurant down the road.
St. LuciaGetting there. A four to five hour hop from the US east coast, against a day of flying and a transfer at the other end.

That tally reads three to one, but don’t stop there. The Maldives wins the single round that many honeymooners care about most, and the rounds below explain exactly when that outweighs everything else.

How We Compared St. Lucia and the Maldives

We judged both on the five things that actually decide a honeymoon: how real and how available the private pool is, what the water and the beach are genuinely like, the kind of privacy and atmosphere you’re buying, what the whole trip costs including getting there, and how hard it is to reach. Every property mentioned is bookable, and every claim about pools comes from the same verification we do for our rankings, which room categories genuinely include one, and which quietly don’t.

Heads up: some links here are affiliate links. If you book through them, EscapeWorthy may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes our verdict, we call both destinations as we honestly see them, including the parts that aren’t flattering.

The Private Pool

Both destinations will sell you a private pool. The difference is how likely you are to actually get one, and what you’re looking at while you’re in it.

St. Lucia: the pool is often the whole room

St. Lucia’s best resorts treat the private pool as standard rather than an upgrade. Every one of Ladera’s 37 adults-only suites has a heated private plunge pool, and every one has the open fourth wall, so the pool sits at the edge of a room that simply stops and becomes the Pitons. Stonefield gives a private pool to every villa but one. Jade Mountain goes furthest of all, with infinity pools averaging around 450 square feet, pools you swim lengths in, tiled so the water reads the same colour as the sea. That’s a genuinely rare thing: a private pool big enough to be a pool rather than a dipping tub.

The catch, and we say it plainly in our ranking, is that St. Lucia uses the phrase loosely too. Jade Mountain’s entry-level Sky suites have a two-person whirlpool rather than a pool at all, and at Cap Maison and Calabash Cove the pool belongs to specific categories while the rest get a jacuzzi.

The Maldives: a pool is usually an upgrade

In the Maldives, the private pool is a premium tier rather than the default. Resorts typically run non-pool water villas alongside pool water villas, and the pool version costs meaningfully more per night, which is exactly why room names here are so specific: “Water Villa with Pool” exists as a category precisely because “Water Villa” doesn’t include one. Book carelessly and you’ll arrive at an overwater deck with a ladder into the lagoon and no pool on it.

When you do get one, though, it’s spectacular in a way St. Lucia can’t match, because the pool is suspended over turquoise water rather than looking at it. A Maldivian pool villa gives you two kinds of swimming a metre apart, and that’s a genuine luxury.

Winner · St. Lucia Bigger pools, and far more likely to come with the room. The Maldives has the more beautiful setting for a pool, but St. Lucia is where you can book almost any suite and know one is waiting, and where the pool is large enough to swim in.

The Water and the Beach

Pale sand and clear shallow turquoise lagoon water on a beach in the Maldives
The Maldives: the lagoon water that no other destination quite manages.

This is the round that decides the argument for a lot of couples, and it isn’t close.

The Maldives: the water is the entire product

Maldivian resorts sit on coral atolls, which means shallow lagoons of impossibly clear, bath-warm water in a colour most people don’t quite believe until they see it. The beaches are soft white coral sand, the sea is calm enough to wade a long way out, and many resorts have a house reef you can snorkel straight from the beach or from the ladder on your villa deck. Turtles, rays and reef sharks are routine rather than an excursion. If your honeymoon fantasy involves being in the water rather than near it, nowhere does this better.

St. Lucia: dramatic coastline, smaller beaches

St. Lucia is a volcanic island, and that shows up in the water. The coastline is steep and spectacular, but the beaches are smaller, often darker-sanded, and the sea shelves away quickly. Anse des Pitons at Sugar Beach is the exception and it’s genuinely lovely, white sand imported and maintained, right between the two Pitons, with good snorkelling off it. Anse Chastanet and Anse Cochon are excellent for diving too.

Here’s the catch that matters for this comparison, though: several of St. Lucia’s best private pool resorts aren’t on a beach at all. Ladera is a thousand feet up and says plainly that it isn’t a beach resort, with a shuttle down to a small public beach where you pay for a chair. Jade Mountain uses Anse Chastanet’s beach below. Stonefield and Fond Doux both run shuttles. So the resort with the pool you want may well not have sand attached.

Winner · The Maldives Nowhere on earth has better water, and it comes with the room. St. Lucia has one outstanding beach and plenty of dramatic coast, but its best pool resorts are up mountains, and its sea is for looking at more than living in.

Vibe, Privacy and Things to Do

Both destinations are private. They’re private in almost opposite ways, and that difference matters more than any other on this page.

The Maldives: privacy by geography

The Maldivian model is one island, one resort. There is no town, no passing traffic, no day-trippers, and no other hotel down the beach, because there is no down the beach. Everyone you see for a week is either staying there or working there. For couples who want to disappear completely, nothing replicates it.

The trade-off is that you can’t leave. Dining means the resort’s restaurants at the resort’s prices, and excursions mean a boat and a fee. Some couples find that liberating, a week where no decision is bigger than which lounger. Others find it claustrophobic by day five, and it’s worth being honest with each other about which of you you are before you book.

St. Lucia: privacy by design, on an island with a pulse

St. Lucia does privacy at the room level instead. The open-wall suites sound exposed and aren’t, they face cliff drops with high walls either side, and resorts like Stonefield scatter standalone villas across acres of rainforest so you rarely see another guest. What you get on top is a real island: Soufrière, a drive-in volcano and sulphur springs, the Gros Piton hike, working cocoa plantations, rum distilleries, restaurants that aren’t your hotel’s, and boat trips down a coastline worth seeing.

The honest counterweight is that a real island comes with real island things, traffic on winding roads, a bit of hassle, and the occasional vendor on the beach. It’s less hermetically sealed, which is the point for some couples and the drawback for others.

Depends on you The Maldives is more secluded; St. Lucia is more interesting. If the honeymoon you want is a week of seeing nobody, the Maldives wins outright. If you’d go stir-crazy without a volcano to climb or a restaurant to discover, St. Lucia is the one.

What It Costs

Compare nightly rates alone and these two look closer than they are. The gap opens up in the lines people forget to budget for, and it opens up early.

What you’re paying forSt. LuciaThe Maldives
Entry-level private pool room From ~$250Fond Doux pool cottage Rarely below ~$700Pool villa, not standard water villa
A pool with every room From ~$400Stonefield, whole villa Not the model herePool is a paid upgrade tier
Top-tier pool villa $800 and upLadera, Sugar Beach, Jade Mountain $1,500 and upOften considerably more
Getting from the airport Taxi, ~$80–12045 to 90 minutes by road Seaplane or speedboatHundreds of dollars per person, return
Eating and drinking Resort or local, your choice Resort only, at resort prices
Can you spend less once there? Yes, easily Not really

Figures are indicative rather than quotes. Rates move sharply by season at both destinations, and Maldivian transfer costs vary a great deal depending on how far your resort sits from Malé. Always confirm the transfer price when you book the room, not after.

The transfer line is the one that catches people out. In St. Lucia you land, you get in a car, and you pay a taxi fare. In the Maldives you land, and then you buy a second journey: a seaplane, a domestic flight and a speedboat, or a long boat transfer, priced per person and charged both ways. For two people it is a meaningful addition to the holiday before you have unpacked, and it is often quoted separately from the room, which is exactly why it surprises people.

Then there’s the captive-market effect. A Maldivian resort island has no competition on it, so every meal, every drink and every excursion is priced accordingly, and there is no cheaper restaurant down the road because there is no road. St. Lucia lets you eat at a beach shack one night and your resort the next, which over a week makes a real difference. The half-board and all-inclusive plans in the Maldives exist precisely because of this, and they are usually worth taking.

Winner · St. Lucia Cheaper to reach, cheaper to stay, and cheaper once you’re there. You can have a genuinely lovely St. Lucia honeymoon with a private pool for roughly what the Maldives costs before you’ve left the airport.

Round 5

Getting There

Nobody books a honeymoon for the journey, but on a one-week trip the journey eats a surprising amount of it, and this is the round where the two destinations are furthest apart.

St. Lucia: a Caribbean hop

From the east coast of the United States, St. Lucia is a straightforward four to five hour flight, with direct services from several major cities. You land at Hewanorra in the south, and then it’s road time: roughly 45 to 90 minutes of winding mountain road to reach the Soufrière resorts where the best private pools are, or a similar run north to Cap Estate. Leave in the morning and you’re in your own pool by the afternoon.

The honest catch is that road. It’s twisting, it’s hilly, and if either of you gets motion sick it’s an unpleasant end to travel day. Helicopter transfers exist and are quick, but they cost real money.

The Maldives: a day of travelling, then a second journey

From North America the Maldives is genuinely far: there’s no direct route, so you’re connecting through Europe or the Middle East, and total travel time typically runs somewhere around 20 to 24 hours door to door. From the UK and Europe it’s considerably easier, a long-haul flight or one connection, which is a big part of why the Maldives is a more common honeymoon from that side of the Atlantic.

Then, having landed at Malé, you travel again. Depending on the resort that’s a seaplane, a domestic flight followed by a speedboat, or a speedboat straight from the airport. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, which means a late arrival can strand you in an airport hotel overnight, so flight timing genuinely matters here in a way it doesn’t in the Caribbean.

Worth knowing before you book flights

If you’re heading to the Maldives, check your resort’s transfer type and its last daylight departure before you book the international flight, not after. Arriving into Malé in the evening can cost you a night in a transit hotel and a chunk of your first morning. It’s the single most common way honeymoon travel days go wrong here.

Winner · St. Lucia Far easier from the Americas, and no second journey at the other end. If you’re flying from the UK or Europe the gap narrows considerably, and for a longer honeymoon of ten days or more, the Maldives’ travel time matters much less.

The verdict

So Which One Is Yours?

Final tally: St. Lucia takes the pool, the cost and the journey, the Maldives takes the water, and the privacy round comes down to what kind of week you actually want. On points that’s a win for St. Lucia, but points aren’t how honeymoons work. One round on this page probably matters more to you than the other four combined, and you already know which one it is.

Still torn? Two questions that usually settle it

First: picture the middle of the week, not the arrival photo. Are you snorkelling off a deck, or are you halfway up a mountain with a rum punch waiting? The honeymoon people remember is the one that matched their temperament, not the one that photographed best.

Second: how long have you got? For seven nights or fewer, St. Lucia gives you far more holiday per day off work, because the Maldives can swallow two of them getting there and back. At ten nights or more, that maths flips and the Maldives becomes much easier to justify.

Common questions

St. Lucia vs the Maldives FAQs

Is St. Lucia or the Maldives better for a honeymoon?
It depends on what you want from the week. St. Lucia is better for private pools, for value, and for couples who want somewhere to explore, and it’s far easier to reach from the Americas. The Maldives is better for water, with lagoons and house reefs nothing in the Caribbean can match, and for total seclusion on a one-island resort. If the pool is the point, choose St. Lucia. If the sea is the point, choose the Maldives.
Which is more expensive, St. Lucia or the Maldives?
The Maldives, usually by a wide margin. Entry-level private pool rooms in St. Lucia start around $250 a night and a whole villa with a pool sits near $400, while a Maldivian pool villa rarely comes in below several hundred more. The bigger difference is what surrounds the room: the Maldives adds a seaplane or speedboat transfer priced per person each way, and there’s no option to eat anywhere cheaper because there’s nowhere else on the island.
Do all Maldives resorts have private pools?
No. In the Maldives a private pool is normally a premium room category rather than standard, which is why resorts list “Water Villa” and “Water Villa with Pool” as separate room types at different prices. Book carefully, because the difference is exactly the thing you’re picturing. In St. Lucia, by contrast, Ladera gives every one of its 37 suites a heated private pool and Stonefield gives one to every villa but one.
Which has better beaches, St. Lucia or the Maldives?
The Maldives, comfortably. Coral atolls mean soft white sand and shallow, bath-warm, exceptionally clear lagoons, with reefs you can snorkel straight from the shore. St. Lucia is volcanic, so beaches are smaller and the water shelves away faster. Anse des Pitons at Sugar Beach is the island’s outstanding exception, and several of St. Lucia’s best private pool resorts aren’t on a beach at all.
How long should a Maldives honeymoon be?
Ten nights or more if you can manage it, especially travelling from North America, where the journey can take a full day each way plus a transfer at Malé. On a seven-night trip you lose a meaningful share of the holiday to travel. St. Lucia works far better for a shorter honeymoon, since you can land in the morning and be in your own pool by the afternoon.
Both of these places will give you the photograph. What they won’t give you is the same holiday. The Maldives is water and silence, a week where the biggest decision is which side of the deck to sit on, and it costs what it costs because getting there is half the product. St. Lucia is drama and variety, a pool with mountains in it, a volcano you can drive into, and change left over at the end. Pick the one that matches how you actually like to spend a day off, and you’ll book the right one either way. Happy travels, Erika
